Do You Know About Jon Van Gorp’s keynote speech?

The chair of Mayer Brown LLP said Friday that law firms that want to do well in the coming years should be ready to listen to their lawyers and staff about the best ways to move forward instead of giving orders from the top down. Jon Van Gorp said in a keynote speech that there is no better way to get good people to leave a law firm than to set up a corporate hierarchy. He was speaking at the end of the Law Firm Management Program at Fordham University School of Law in New York, where leaders from law firms across the country spoke every week.
History of Mayer Brown:
The three companies that now make up Mayer Brown all started in the 1800s. Adolf Kraus and Levy Mayer started the US part of the company in 1881 in Chicago. Soon after, it was known as Kraus, Mayer, and Brackett. After the firm’s name changed a few times to reflect the people who worked there, it became known in the United States as Mayer, Brown & Platt.

The English part of the company, Rowe & Maw, was founded in 1895 in London. It was known by that name until Mayer, Brown & Platt and Rowe & Maw joined forces in 2002 to become Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw. In 2007, the firm’s name was shortened from Mayer and Brown to just Mayer Brown. Johnson Stokes & Master was started in Hong Kong in 1863. It is now called by this name (it used to be called Mayer firm JSM) because it merged with this in 2008.

What is the Role of a Firm in getting Rid of a Statue of the Tiananmen Square Massacre?
The University of Hong Kong hired the firm to help take down a statue on its campus. That remembered the people who died in the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and massacre. The law company sent a letter to the pro-democracy group Hong Kong Alliance, which was known for holding annual candlelight vigils to remember the victims of the massacre and for putting up the statue at the university. The letter asked that the statue be taken down in seven days or be considered abandoned.

The Alliance had already broken up a month before Mayer Brown’s letter because its members had been arrested on national security charges. The statue did not belong to the Alliance but to the Danish sculptor Jens Galschit, who made it. Before the university decided to take it down, the statue was called the Pillar of Shame.
